In any given organization, teams are where the work happens. Teams are highly interdependent – they plan work, solve problems, make decisions, and review progress for specific projects in the business. If each of your teams have a common set of values and access to the same resources, why then are some teams effective and others not?

Before we answer that question, let’s look at what effective teams do. Effective teams work efficiently, innovate through collaboration, and continue to inspire other team members. Teams are where:

  • Innovative ideas are born (or dismissed)
  • Collaboration happens (or is stifled)
  • Turnover is low (or high)
  • Deadlines and performance metrics are met (or missed)

Researchers at Google ran an initiative called Project Aristotle as a tribute to Aristotle’s quote that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” These researchers found that what really matters is less about who is on the team and more about how the team works together. These results mirror what Chapman & Co. has also discovered in our own work inside our parent company, Barry-Wehmiller, and with our clients.
